Inspiration 59 / Slinkachu

I’m really excited to share with you guys an artist I’ve been inspired by for quite a while now. I can’t remember the exact age I must have been (maybe 12 or 13?) but I was having this major miniature moment. By miniature I mean, extremely tiny furniture, objects, and scenes. I remember having this little book that showed you how to make miniature objects and furniture using only paper. I’m not sure why I loved it so much but the interest sort of carried through college even though I never did much about it.

It wasn’t until my film photography class at SJSU that I was actually able to explore that random obsession. By that time I had already discovered Slinkachu and I knew I wanted to incorporate miniatures into my film photographs. I was so inspired by this artist that I had to make it happen. I scoured the internet to find miniature people, many of which I found unpainted from railway train set websites. It was honestly such an insane process for such a small assignment but it made me appreciate the work of Slinkachu that much more.

Slinkachu is a London-based artist that leaves miniature people on the streets of various cities around the world. Creating these incredibly tiny scenes involve remodeling and painting miniature train set figurines. Once finished, Slinkachu photographs them and leaves them behind only to wonder whether his installations will be found, go unnoticed, or even sat on. The thing I love most about his work is how much it puts life into perspective. It forces you to think of yourself in relationship to a big city or even the world.
