Benefits of Renting a Photography Studio
I’ll be really honest and say that I used to be so afraid of photo studios. Literally every part about it. From the studio equipment to the fact that I’ve never been a strong technical shooter, everything about shooting in a controlled space intimidated me so much. I’ve always felt more comfortable shooting outside in the environment with natural light. That is until we started Weekend Creative.
All of our creative product photography dreams could only really be achieved in studio. Luckily, the studio photography class Elle and I met in slightly warmed me up to the equipment and slowly over time I realized that my fear of photo studios eventually went away. I really owe it to all of the studios we got the chance to rent when we first started our business. With that being said, I’d love to share a few reasons why renting a studio can be so beneficial.
Using a photo studio can be one of the best ways to get acquainted with studio lighting equipment. It’s the perfect chance to play around with lights and see what you can achieve. Normally if you’re shooting outside, the lighting situation can change pretty drastically depending on the time of day.
Working in a studio, however, completely takes out that variable and allows for more control. It also means that you don’t have to depend on shooting at any certain time. Having complete control over your environment in studio also makes it that much easier to maintain consistency throughout the whole project.
Studio equipment in general can be very expensive and not everyone will have the funds to invest in some quality lights when first starting out. Renting a photo studio can be a really affordable option to gain experience without the financial burden of purchasing your own equipment. Most studios have an hourly rate and some of them even offer discounts for longer shoots.
Most photography studios will have a random collection of props or items that can be used during your rental. Furniture, fabrics, glassware, or other decorative items can all be used to add texture, composition, and color to your work. Many of these props can quite literally inspire you during a shoot because there are endless ways of using them. Renting a photo studio gives you the opportunity of getting to play around with various props you might not normally have access to.
What’s not to love about having free coffee and a space where you don’t have to worry about the weather. Renting a studio can be quite the comfortable experience. Some spaces will have a small kitchen where you can heat up food for lunch. Others will have a lounging place or desk where other members of your team can work while you shoot. Some of them may even have a private bathroom. Not having to use crappy public restrooms? Sign me up.
All jokes aside, renting a photo studio can be extremely beneficial in so many ways and I highly encourage you all to try it even if it’s just for a couple of hours. It is one of the easiest ways to try out equipment, polish up your skills, and work in an environment that is conducive to endless creativity.
